I started rowing spring of freshmen year as an off-season sport to keep me in shape for volleyball and fell in love with the sport. I quickly switched to rowing full time by my sophomore year. I transferred from Culver Academies to Brebeuf Jesuit the summer before my junior year and continued rowing through Indy Rowing Center (IRC). I am on my 6th season of rowing and am enjoying the year-round training IRC has to offer that couldn’t be found through a scholastic program.
I believe I will be a good fit for college rowing due to my tenacity and love for a challenge as well as my knowledge of the importance of rest. My tenacity shows through in my personal life as well as athletics. I have struggled with a rare migraine disease where I have a headache every second of everyday for four years now. Many people with chronic pain stop living their lives and experiencing new things due to debilitating illness. While I struggled at first, I always wanted to push myself to excel. I kept playing club volleyball and even moved away from home at boarding school (Culver Academies). I never wanted my illness to take over my life; I am determined to keep living. Once I moved to Culver, I got to try rowing. It was a new challenge. Unlike some, I was not immediately good. My novice season, I came in every day before practice 30 mins early to work on technique in the tank. I slowly saw this start to pay off in my splits. By the end of my season, I ended in the Novice A. Through my fitness journey, especially rowing, I have learned the importance of active rest. My rigorous training schedule lends itself well to injury and overuse if I don't take care of my body. I not only train like an athlete, but stretch, fuel, hydrate, and sleep like an athlete. You can't just put in the work in the erg room--it starts with how you fuel and rest your body first.
My goal in life in to change my community through engaging in the democratic process. I want to work on Capitol Hill creating legislation and changing the world for the better. However, Capitol Hill has an age requirement. In the mean time, I use my power as a student to work for meaningful change; I hold workshops on civic responsibility on campus, testify at the Indiana Senate, and lobby for legislation on a national level.
I look forward to hearing from your program!!
