Personal Statement

My name is Grace Sabatino and I am a coxswain on the CRI Women's Competitive Master's rowing team out of Brighton, Massachusetts. I was a coxswain for the CRI youth girls team and transferred in 2016 to the Master's team. The opportunity to transfer to an elite competitive enabled me to further develop my coxswain skills and education. However, it was a bittersweet transition as I left behind good friends and coaches. I later realized that it was the best decision for my rowing future.

The responsibility of guiding a Master's boat with adult athletes was initially more difficult than leading a youth girls boat. The expectation is found in the positive team results rather than individual. I earned the respect of the Master's team athletes through hard work, focus and the ability to motivate the most seasoned rower. I am at CRI for practice three days a week at 5 a.m.  and start my school day following practice. Without complaint,  I am there and able to fully function all day through my studies waiting for the next day's practice.

The achievement of these past 2 years for me has been life changing. I am focused and driven by my sport.  In addition to rowing I have been  a teachers assistant for Physical Education classes  and a junior Physics class. I have been an intern for the Winchester High School athletic trainer the past two years.  Working with all varsity team athletes.

Community service work has been a focus in my life as well. For the past four years I have attended Catholic Heart Work Camp with my church youth group, providing home repair services to families in need in the southern state regions of the US.

I have given much thought about the rigors of committing to a competitive rowing program in college.  I know that I will be able to handle the regime of a rigorous practice schedule, school work and college activities while maintaining a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit.
