Personal Statement

I fell in love with rowing after my first 2k erg test wearing an N95 mask. I remember my coach at the time described the feeling as “pouring acid on your legs and shoving a sandpaper-covered vacuum tube down your throat.” While that is remarkably accurate, there’s something inexplicable about one’s curiosity that seems to take over. How fast can I REALLY go? No one really knows so why not just smile and keep going? I have applied this mindset to everything I strive to accomplish whether on the water or the erg, in my academics, and any other challenge I’ve accepted. I strive to make my team and coaches, teachers, parents and family, and myself proud every day. I’m looking forward to continuing to do so at the collegiate level. I will, however, miss my dog (huge animal lover) so I hope that isn’t a deal breaker.

  • "All Navy camps share the common goal of developing a camper’s ability and exposing her to the Midshipman concepts of honor, integrity and discipline. Additionally, our rowing-specific camps aim to: 1. To foster a love of rowing in our campers. For our experienced campers, our expert staff of both coaches and counselors hope to deepen that love of the sport and keep our campers chasing after their next goals in the sport. For our novice campers, we charge ourselves with the bill of instilling that love and excitement for the sport – we hope to hear that the graduates of our novice program leave camp looking to return home and find a local program where they can continue to row throughout the school year. 2. To aid in the personal development of each individual camper. For our experienced campers, we look to slow things down and really focus on the details of the rowing stroke. Our coaches will help their campers move efficiently with the rowers around them, but their larger aim is to build upon each camper’s individual skills and make sure they are using their bodies (or, in the case of our coxswains, their voices) most effectively to help move the boat. For our novice campers, we teach a very fundamental stroke that campers can take wherever they are going next and build upon successfully. To attain these goals, we boat campers in eights according to ability and experience and maintain a low athlete-to-coach ratio. For water practices, campers are kept with the same coach and group of athletes for the week to allow a consistent platform for improvement. The boats are brought together as one group for land seminars covering a range of topics including – but not limited to – land/erg training, nutrition, mobility, strength training, coxing, and collegiate recruiting."
