I was raised in a very athletic family. My mother was a varsity volleyball and water polo player at Queen’s University, and is now a high school Phys. Ed teacher. My father played Junior Hockey and Division 1 and 2 rugby in New Zealand. My sister was also an elite level basketball player, and converted to rowing in grade 12, and is now a Junior rowing for the University of Virginia.
My athletic focus through grade, middle, and high school was basketball, but in grade 9 I added rugby to the mix. We were National capital champions that year, and won silver medals in both grade 10 and 11. In grade 10 I decided to give rowing a try, and quickly fell in love with the sport. So much so, that I decided that it would be the sport I wanted to focus on for post secondary athletics.
I am a team focused athlete, and quickly came to learn that no sport counts on that mentality more than rowing. Whether it’s family, friends, or sports, I am a loyal team player who wants to contribute to what is best for the team. I have attended Olympia Sports Camp’s leadership program, and have also worked there as a camp counsellor, which has taught me a lot about group and team dynamics and contributed to a better understanding of what makes a team successful.
My hope is to pursue a post secondary education in Media Studies/Sports Journalism, and to become a member of that schools rowing program.
I look forward to further discussing future opportunities with any coaches interested in doing so.
Best regards,
Danika
