Personal Statement

Howdy! I am a senior at Saint Michael's Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas. I started rowing in the spring of 2020, and have been rowing since. While the pandemic has thrown our program some curve balls, we have been fortunate enough to continue training.  I am a life-long swimmer who became interested in rowing. Growing up in Austin, I always looked over the bridge on Lady Bird Lake, just knowing I had to get on the water.  On a whim, I decided to attend a summer rowing camp and was instantly hooked!

Though I am  newer to the sport of rowing than some of my teammates are, I work hard during practice to focus on my technique and to lower my splits. This summer I was able to attend Youth Nationals. I raced in the Inclusive 2x and won 1st with my teammate. I also participated in US Rowing's Olympic Development Program. I had a lot of fun, learned so much from coaches, and made life-long friends. I am very excited for my final season on my club team, and hope to continue this sport after I graduate!

If swimming taught me anything, it showed me how important technique is to allow efficiency in the water. I am a hardworking, dedicated, and strong willed athlete on and off the water. School is just as important to me as rowing, so I study hard to learn and earn outstanding grades. Coming from a big family, I understand the importance of teamwork, loyalty, and friendship and I am an outgoing teammate. I strive to improve and better myself academically and athletically, so I love the competitive nature that rowing offers.  I look forward to continuing rowing in college because it is such a fun sport and I love being able to work with like minded strong athletes. I cannot wait to share my enthusiasm with a college team!
