I'm Shay Triepel and my goal is to row in college and beyond. My passion for rowing was ignited during the winter of my freshman year. It was a brutal way to get introduced to the sport but it taught me a lot. Crew practice follows my high school swim practice. Although understandably tiring, it is so worth it as I have built my aerobic base. My interest in crew was inspired by my older sister, who was a competitive light weight high school rower when she was catastrophically injured in a car accident when she was 16 years old. My mother had given my sister an erg a few months before her accident. Bored during the fall of my freshman year, I tried it out. And I was ecstatic over seeing my improvement! I hopped on the erg over and over again. My mom saw my spark and
offered to sign me up for crew. I began during winter training in my freshman year. Going into my first season on the water, I placed 4th in the single at States (Virginia) and reached the semi-finals at the Stotesbury Regatta. This year, as a sophmore, I won the Junior event in the single at States (Virginia) and my time placed me 16 seconds faster than the student who won varsity. My coach successfully petitioned for me to compete at SRAA Nationals, where I reached the semi-finals and placed 7th.
I love rowing and how technical it is and how I can always find a way to improve. In school, I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and achieved the 96 percentile on the PSAT. I am a board member in our school's Key Club and a member of the National Honor Society. I am interested in Engineering and love discovering how things work in the world. What intrigues me about rowing is how the precise technical knowledge, combined with all one's power, produces such a beautiful sport.
