Personal Statement

"Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think of you."
This quote by John Wooden is one that I like to live by. Character, like the ability to be an amazing athlete or work hard in school, is crucial to becoming a good leader, athlete, student, and person, especially in college. So I make it a priority to add character and to do what I believe is right everyday.
My name is Flannery Davis; I will be a junior at Palisade High School in August. I am 5'7" and weigh 125 pounds. I have a 4.0 and I have been a starter for PHS girl's soccer since my freshman year. I was awarded All-Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman and was the lead scorer with 17 goals. Sophomore year, I received First Team All-Conference and was the lead scorer again with 20 goals. I have taken Honors Classes throughout both my freshman and sophomore years and I am on an AP track for my Junior and Senior Years. I have been playing soccer since I was four and loved it since I was four. I have played for the Fire FC Club, Grand Junction since I was ten and I participated in the Utah Olympic Development Program for two years (2008-2010) and made the state team and also the Region IV Camp in 2009. In my limited spare time, I like to work-out at Crossfit Red, play basketball, hike, swim, travel, and hang out with my friends.
But back to character. I believe that even if there is an athlete who excels in school and sports and acts as a leader on his or her team, that person is not the best they can be if they do not have character. Character is the ability to never give up, the ability to constantly be your best in every situation, to sacrifice yourself for your team, to have high expectations for yourself, to contiuously learn even after you succeed, and to play the game for what its worth. Character is almost every aspect of leadership combined into one thing and it is the one concept that can either make you or break you. Character is a part of my life and I include it in everything I do, because throughout the years I have worked to let my character shine through, not my reputation. So, therefore, I also believe that leadership is key to having a great, loving team. Good leadership at least. Since I recently took an Advanced Leadership Class this year in school, I feel that I am well educated in the ideas involved in becoming a good leader. I may not be John Wooden or even a great leader but I am on the right path to becoming someone my team can look up to. My values on life and leadership are with me in every experience and will be a part of me at a collegiate level as well. Athleticism and being a good student are also part of my resume but my beliefs and strength to keep them are what I take pride in everyday now and in the future.
Currently I am looking at colleges on the West Coast and in the Upper East Coast. I am mostly open-minded about the type of college I would like to go to but I would like to play at the D1 level, for now. Since I am mostly looking at out-of-state schools I will be needing some financial aids but I will also be applying for scholarships. I am undecided on what my major will be but I have looked at pre-med, psychology, sports medicine, and business.
As for my athletic goals, I would like to play college soccer, no matter what. I would like to make an impact on the team I play for, enjoy the experience, play at a high level, and become a better player.
In soccer and in life, I have goals and aspirations. I have strengths and weaknesses and good and bad experiences. But I have never given up, I constantly give my best, and I show who I am and be who I am. After all, character is a very powerful thing.
