I have been playing soccer since I was five. From that first fall morning that I stepped in the dew on the field’s grass, I knew that I was doing something that I would never give up and would love for the rest of my life. Through soccer I developed many skills as both goalkeeper and a field player, but I have also learned more than how to play the game that I love.
The game has taught me invaluable communication, teamwork skills, goal setting, and to win and lose both with grace. Most importantly, I have learned to be a disciplined athlete who is committed to improving each and every day on and off the field and in all aspects of life. Coming from a small school, it is easy to be the proverbial big fish in the small pond. I have heard my parents and family say this to me many times, but I really didn’t know what it meant until I went for my first premier club tryout. I was no longer the big fish in the small pond who was a standout athlete. I was just like everyone else and there were many who were better than I.
Until that day I really never had to work hard to be a good athlete but, being in the company of so many outstanding athletes, the realization came to me very quickly that even though I was a good athlete, I could be an even better athlete, as well as person and student. As I stood there in the presence of these girls that I had never met and that are now my family, my teammates, I knew from that day forward that I would work each and every day to be the best athlete and person that I could be. It’s not every day that a dew-drenched field and small ball can teach you such a huge life lesson, but that’s what happened, and continues to do so. I love soccer and I love all that I learned and will continue to learn on and off the field. All I want is the opportunity to continue to grow as person and an athlete through the sport that I love.
