15-40-1 is not an awesome win-loss record. However, to me, these numbers mean much more than victories vs defeats. I have learned many things while playing and continue to improve each time I am on the field. Growing up, I played keeper on recreation teams that were pretty good. I became especially confident with shootouts because I was the goalkeeper on the winning team most every time. In high school, I have rarely been the winning goalkeeper. This doesn’t mean that I am not an outstanding keeper, but that there are extenuating circumstances.
I play for a small school at which volleyball is king. So few girls come out to play soccer that everybody makes the team. Many girls tryout without ever having played soccer before. I am often shot on 20+ times a game and am able to save at least 90% of those shots. Since our offense typically averages 1 point a game, I know that only one score against me can result in a loss for the team. I put every skill I have to use in order to help earn a win for our team.
I have good hands that developed from years of playing basketball, softball, and football. I am quick and can read the ball and field well. I am very coachable and am willing to learn new things to improve my game. I am respected by my coaches and my teammates. I have been the captain in soccer for one year, and for three years in basketball. My teammates look up to me and listen to what I have to say. From my soccer experience, I have learned how to take a “beat down” and bounce back. I also analyze every goal scored against me in order to learn ways to save balls in the future. I would love to be able to continue playing soccer after high school while I continue my education and see just how good of a goalkeeper I can become.
