Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Meta Fischer and I am a goalkeeper at DeForest high school in the class of 2023. Playing soccer at the collegiate level has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I started playing soccer competitively when I was eight when I was encouraged to try the sport by individuals who saw potential in me. When I first started playing, I played anywhere on the field, yet soon I was drawn to playing goalkeeper because I enjoyed being able to impact the game.
Around that same time, I was training to earn my black belt in karate. Karate has taught me so much that I continue to use in soccer. Karate gave me the discipline and dedication that I needed to be able to go to the extra goalkeeper practices through my club team and IDEAL Performance and put in hours outside of scheduled practices to improve my goalkeeping skills. Karate also taught me perseverance, something that I use not only when the game isn’t going the way my team wants it to go, but also when I face a challenge in training perfecting my technique.
These traits were all needed during my freshman year when the soccer season got canceled due to Covid-19. During this time I worked out on my own, spending hours improving my goal kicks and punts, as well as doing agility training with a speed ladder in my basement. I also used an unpredictable rebounder so that I was able to work on my reaction time in my backyard without needing a coach or training partner present. All of this extra training paid off my sophomore season when I was the starting goalkeeper for my high school team in which we earned a regional championship, and at the end of the season, I earned 2nd-team all-conference honors.
Much like my athletics, I have academically always strived to be the best that I can be, pushing myself to take honors and advanced placement courses. My long-term goal is to pursue a career in the medical field and I believe that the values that soccer has helped instill in me will help me to achieve that goal.
