Personal Statement
Hello coaches! My name is Kylie Echols and I have been a competitive swimmer for almost 10 years. When I was seven years old I discovered my passion for swimming while competing in a local summer swim league. I have been pursuing that passion ever since. I currently train year-round with FAST swim team in Oro Valley, AZ, practicing six days a week.
I have been on my high school's varsity swim team since my freshman year. As a sophomore and junior, I have had the opportunity to develop leadership skills through serving as vice-president and president of the varsity swim team. I am a three-time qualifier in the Arizona high school state championships, competing in the 50 free, 100 free, medley and freestyle relays, and I look forward to competing again next year as a senior.
Swimming has helped me develop leadership skills, perseverance, resilience, and a growth mindset. I am looking forward to applying these skills, as well as developing new ones, in a collegiate swimming environment. Through swimming, I have also learned how important team unity is to me, and the value of hard work.
Academically, I have worked diligently to achieve a 3.7 unweighted GPA. I like to challenge myself by taking rigorous classes, including honors, AP, and concurrent enrollment courses. Many of the skills I have learned from swimming have already helped me to reach some of my academic goals, including keeping my GPA above a 3.7, being accepted into the National Honor Society, and receiving A's in difficult courses. I set high goals for myself athletically and academically and work earnestly to obtain them. My future academic goals include graduating in the top 10% of my class, entering college having earned at least nine college credit hours, and receiving an academic scholarship.
My experiences in leadership, team building, goal-setting, and work ethic complement my technical swimming skills and would make a great contribution to a collegiate swim team.
