I have loved the sport of swimming ever since I was 8 years old when I joined the Alameda Gators swim team. As I have progressed through the age groups, my favorite stroke has changed but as I’ve matured as a swimmer, my love and focus is on freestyle, especially the mid-distance events. My best events are the 200 and 500 freestyle, and I made the automatic qualifying time for the 500 free at California’s North Coast Section (NCS) meet in my freshman year in high school. My goal was to qualify for this same meet all four years of high school but sadly sophomore year it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar to everyone else in our country, my training this past summer has been unconventional at times, including open water swimming in the San Francisco Bay to maintain endurance while the pools were closed. Now that my team is back in the pool I have been extremely dedicated to training in order to get back to the place I was before the pandemic to prepare for the hopefully upcoming meets. During all of the training and pandemic-related challenges, I have still been able to maintain a 4.43 weighted GPA for the first semester of junior year while taking multiple honors and AP level classes. My cumulative unweighted GPA at the end of sophomore year was a 3.9.
In terms of my choice of colleges, I have a strong interest in the biological sciences but am still exploring many options to figure out the school that will work best for me and will allow me to thrive for all four years. I believe that I would be a great fit for college swimming programs because I thrive in a team environment. I am a highly motivated, diligent trainer, but am also known on my team for consistently staying optimistic and positive during difficult sets and long weeks of training. I am always willing to help a teammate out and cheer loudly for them behind the blocks. On the other hand, a little friendly competition is always fun because it brings out the best in all the swimmers. Most importantly though I am an extremely passionate swimmer and a fierce competitor in the water!
