As the oldest of four kids, I have seen how active and involved parents can impact the lives of their children. My parents are college-educated professionals (both CPA’s) and have always taught me to have “options.” Options lead to opportunities, and for me to grab these opportunities, I need to create academic and athletic options for myself.
After ending my six-year gymnastics career, I started a new athletic chapter in my life with a sport that I was unfamiliar with. I had gone as far as I could with gymnastics and the wear and tear, physically and mentally, was no longer worth it. In my eighth-grade year, I started exploring other sports where I could use my athletic abilities. My track and field career started here in middle school and continued into my freshman year at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. In my freshman year, I joined our track club team, and through hard work, I was blessed to attend the 2019 Simplot Games in Idaho. This was my first “real” meet that I had ever been to, so I was very nervous. In my first race, I ran the 60-meter hurdles and placed almost last. Not being successful was a new experience for me, but it showed me where I currently stood in the sport and how much harder I needed to work to meet my standards. This meet was a humbling experience for me, and it redirected my entire approach to track and field.
As the team captain this year, I will be in a position to demonstrate the importance of leadership to my team. I am looking for a college program that is elite and well-respected, in academics and athletics. The university must also have the same sense of community as experienced here at O’Dowd. In college, I am looking forward to studying sports medicine and actively contributing to the team dynamics and performance level in women’s hurdles or sprints.
