Personal Statement
I believe that I am a good candidate for a collegiate team because I always put my full commitment in any sport that I do, as well as being a very competitive individual. I began focusing on swimming at age six after I had two major gastrointestinal surgeries that hindered me from continuing in gymnastics. At age seven, I also began taekwondo and began to compete nationally and had to choose one sport. At the time, I chose to focus on taekwondo which built up my sense of discipline, self-awareness and respect. I trained for nine years, am a third degree black belt and hold two district championship titles, seven state championship titles and was in the top ten in the world twice for my age group and belt rank.
I began swimming again because I wanted to be part of a team. I feel that I am different from other recruits because despite not being in a year-round swim club, I have increased in my performance and times in swimming each season. I attribute this to listening to the feedback my coaches give me and do my best to incorporate their suggestions into my technique and practice. After two years of hard work and setting goals for myself, I, for the first time, made the state team for two of my relays. I qualified and competed on both relays, either as anchor or lead off leg in the freestyle relays. Along with being a good listener, I strive to push myself to try new things, an example of this was during my freshman year when my interest in diving led me to compete for my school after only a year of training, as a diver and a swimmer.
