I came into this sport after being told by someone that I would never be able to swim like she could. This was the fuel that pushed me to try. I was determined to learn how to swim, and little did I know it would become the platform for my future. Swimming has taught me to be self-disciplined and diligent in not only my swim performance, but also in my academics and personal life. At swim I have earned the responsibility of helping coach the younger groups after volunteering for 2 years, and then being hired as a junior coach. Additionally, I was chosen by the head coach for the LWSA Gators to be the Swim Representative for the House of Delegates and also the Safe Sport Representative for the state of Illinois. As a two-year varsity athlete and two-time sectional swimmer, I have learned team camaraderie and the impact the other swimmers have on me and the impact I have on them. This drive carries over to my education by teaching me to manage my time to make sure I maintain my grades while attending to my swim responsibilities. I want to continue to be a part of an influential team both in and out of the water, and I know I can help by showing others through my dedication to the sport. My parents always taught me that “I can’t” is not in my vocabulary, only “I will try”, and no matter how hard an obstacle may seem we all have a chance to overcome it if we just try.
