Living on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard has probably been the most influential part of my life so far. It is secluded and cut off from the “real world,” and we have to take a 45 minute ferry ride to get to the mainland. I have lived on Martha’s Vineyard my whole life, surrounded by beauty and nature. I love to swim, but I also love to camp and be outdoors enjoying nature. I learned to swim in a pond when I was 4, taking advantage of my towns free swim lessons.. After trying many sports, I realized that swimming was my sport. Swimming has been a very important aspect of my life, being surrounded by water and all. Swimming has taught me to be competitive not just in athletics but in academics, as well. Even though swimming feels more like an individual sport, it has taught me to work with others, by being a team captain and doing my best to be a role model for new or younger swimmers. I have also learned to set goals, as well as records.
My goal for the rest of high school is to keep high honors for the rest of junior year and into senior year. For college I plan on keeping up my grades as well as my swimming career. The biggest obstacle in swimming was near the beginning when I was not a very outgoing, competitive person so I did not improve much, but once I started to get a consistent technique I began to improve and became more competitive. I am honest, helpful, generous, and a great listener. I am a new member of Scouts BSA and working toward my Eagle Scout award. As I wrap up high school I will continue to strive for excellence in my academics and athletic endeavors. I have come a long way in my confidence in my abilities. I’m only getting faster and stronger and I look forward to bringing all that I’ve learned to a college community and team.
