Crowded, steamy pools have become second nature to me. The lanes loaded with swimmers warming up while the bleachers are filled with excited parents. The cold water and smell of chlorine make me feel like I am home.
I started swimming when I was 3, I always loved the water and immediately felt comfortable in the pool. I would love the excitement of going to swim lessons and the thought of jumping into the water. You couldn't keep me out of the pool, I wanted to swim, I loved to swim.
I have been on a swim team since I was 9 and it has taught me so much. Participating on a team has made me realize that swimming is both an individual and a team sport. I've created bonds with special people who love to do the same thing and that helps when you have to get through that last grueling set at practice. I am very thankful for my supportive teammates and patient but demanding coaches.
The discipline it takes to commit to swimming and to push yourself through tough workouts improves the ability to commit to schoolwork, and gives me the drive to do better each time. Swimming has taught me that hurdles can be overcome and dedication is the root of success. If faced with a demanding assignment, I already have the discipline from countless pool practices to help me through. Because of my swimming aptitude, I can help the college swim team compete. As I mature mentally, physically and emotionally, swimming continues to form me into the person I am today.
