I was born in North Carolina and moved to eastern Washington the summer before 8th grade. It was a dramatic change in many ways: the weather, culture, and especially athletics. My North Carolina year round swim team consisted of almost 300 swimmers, multiple coaches, and swimmers that had qualified for Olympic trials while my Washington team was much more modest in size and goals. A year after moving, I was able to work with a coach that focused on pushing me past my limits to make me better. I found my love for swimming again and even more determination, taking first place in the 500 free and second place in the 200 free at districts and qualifying for states my freshmen year. I continued my work into year round and by sophomore year I was able to qualify for states again in my individual events, anchor both of my team's qualifying relays, and come in top 20 at states in the 500 free, 200 free, 400 free relay, and 200 free relay . In addition, I was selected as "Swimmer of the Year" by the Yakima Valley Sports Commission.
The dichotomous nature of my experience has benefited me in so many ways especially when it comes to understanding my individual strengths but also my needs from a program. I am looking for a team that has a drive to get better and a coach that stands behind his/her team to set new limits and push their athletes past that. I need a coach that is going to be hard and demanding but still have the ability to be supportive and welcoming. I believe I would be a good addition to any team that is goal oriented, motivated, and works together to develop a stronger program for future swimmers while also pushing each other and themselves to reach faster times and new accomplishments as individuals.
