My name is Mary Helen Schaefer, and I am a seventeen year old runner from Rogers, Arkansas. As a child of a doctor and a sibling to seven kids, throughout my life I quickly learned what it was like to be a leader. I have been pushed to my limits academically and athletically because of my family. Running has always been a large part of my family’s life, and I have had so much support from my parents and siblings. Throughout my high school experience, I have run with a club and participated with school track and cross country. I am the cross country and track captain at Ozark Catholic Academy. As a captain, I’ve learned how to maintain focus on my times and lead others to the best of their ability. I have built up and helped found the spirit of the cross country program because I am apart of the first class at my school. I want to major in Pre-Med and work with cancer patients when I am older. I have always had an attitude for improvement, I am able to take advice well and I want to improve and better myself in every aspect of my life. Running with a club has given me the opportunity to work on my individual times and I have been able to compete and qualify at the national level. I am motivated and my participation in both school and club running is a testament to the amount of effort and work I put into the things I am passionate about.
