Hearing stories about Coach Amber and how hard core she was filled my ears the summer before my seventh grade year. I was scared to go to my first summer group run, but my best friend’s mom, Michelle, told me she was making me go. Michelle had a strong feeling I was meant to be a runner. I didn’t believe her at first. I had ran a few 5k’s for fun, and every once and a while I would go for a run, but never did I think I would be pursuing it as a sport. I showed up to my first run fearful of what was to come, but instead of having an awful experience I felt supported and excited for my next one. Amber told me I did great for my first time. I soon learned that running made me feel strong and empowered to always do more. Surrounded by a great support system the last few years I have grown not only as a runner but also as a person.
At my school our running program is amazing. My coach, Amber Garrett, ran for Iowa State, and has helped me immensely throughout my running career. I am looking for a program that will be a great fit for me both athletictally and academically. I believe I not only have the skills to compete at the collegiate level but also the leadership qualities, positive thinking, and work ethic to succeed. As a three sport athlete, I know that I have what it takes to balance track with my college life.
