I started running at a very young age, but only started looking at running competitively in seventh grade, when I was 12, and even though I wasn't that good, I worked hard to find something I excelled at as I very much enjoy the sport and community. In high school, at the end of my indoor season, one of my captains recruited me for pole vault and began to train me and after my first competition I showed some competence but was unable to practice due to a lack of resources. I still persisted as I felt very confident in this event and very much liked it. I aspire to be a collegiate athlete and a biochemist.
Since I've gone to college I've learned that the only way you can succeed in a sport in which many are at your level or better is to fight, but not enough for it to crush you. Focusing on getting a personal record too hard could cause you to not perform to your full ability. I don't let bad meets get me down and use it as motivation to do better. My school, Bronx Science is competitive, as in order for students to attend they must be a top scorer of a city wide test. We all strive to be the best in the class despite our health. I believe I stand out, though I'm not the top of all of my classes, because I don't let test scores define people and believe ones personality and actions illustrate them instead.
