Committed To And Passionate About Pole Vaulting
I am a rising junior at Shaker High School and could not be more excited about having two more years of track and field, during which I will have the opportunity to continue learning and growing.
My goal is to excel further each year in pole vault so that upon graduation, I might be in a position to make a meaningful contribution to a collegiate track program.
Becoming the NYS 2025 Outdoor Pole Vault Champion
My coach asked that I focus on areas essential to growth including the following:
Working towards establishing a solid foundation, continuously refining vaulting phases, embracing requested changes, building muscle memory to develop consistency, transitioning to longer and heavier weight poles, and lengthening my approach, all while maintaining confidence, patience and positivity.
Focus in those areas resulted in my vaulting higher as my seasons progressed which in turn allowed me to earn more meet points to help my team succeed.
In addition, the coach's approach and the work done in practices positioned me to break my school's pole vault record of 10'6", for the first time, in 9th grade with a jump of 11'0" at the New York State Qualification Meet.
In my 10th grade indoor season I qualified for the NYS Indoor State Championship and jumped 10'6", securing 12th place.
In my 10th grade outdoor season, I qualified for the NYS Outdoor State Championship and jumped 12'6", securing 1st place.
League Structure That Promotes Aiming Higher
Pole vaulting within our league, as well as at most schools throughout our state, has become more competitive. It pushes me in a good way to aim higher.
At the same time, it's a very welcoming atmosphere where vaulters and coaches at competing schools root for one another. It's just another aspect of vaulting that draws me to the event and has me more committed to giving it my all.
A Steady Climb Upward
All through my first year of vaulting, the large number of accomplished vaulters in our league gave me superior competitors to aspire to. I often check meet results on MileSplit and on a "local" website that features a leaderboard.
When my 2024 outdoor season began, my clearances weren't high enough to list on the leaderboard, but by the end of that outdoor season, I was third on that same leaderboard - out of the 50 vaulters listed.
Now, in my 2025 outdoor season, my personal bests are top among the state rankings and second in Section II Track and Field.
Fully Committed to Advancing
My goals for the coming seasons include working with my coach to further improve the technical aspects of my vault; from approach to clearance, increasing my strength, continuing to progress to longer and heavier poles, and working more at being a student of the pole vault.
