My name is Fatima Henderson-Bernard and I attend Northland High School in Columbus City Schools. I was adopted from Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa at the age of 2. I am bilingual because I attended one of the only french immersion elementary schools in Ohio. I would be a great fit for your college and team because I was raised to respect everyone and to have an open mind about everything.
Through the many activities I am involved in, I’ve learned many skills, such as leadership and teamwork. I have learned leadership by being a member of the leadership committee in the STEM club, I am a district student ambassador to the superintendent and I am also a team captain for the women's Track team at my high school. I have had to communicate with a variety of different people through school, sports, and volunteer work which helped build my communication skills.
I am not entirely sure what my college major will be but I do know that I am interested in sports management or something similar. I’ve overcome many challenges throughout my life. One major challenge is the fact that since I am adopted my parents do not look like me, we do not share the same ethnicity. All throughout elementary school, when one of my parents would come and pick me up from school or volunteer in the classroom, the kids would be shocked when I told them that the white couple over there are my parents. I’ve overcome that pressure by not caring so much about what people think of me.
I'm a good fit for your team and college because I am a good student and I like being a part of a team. In between my cross country season and spring Track season this past year, I joined the Columbus panthers indoor track AAU team. I love running and being a part of a team and I look forward to being able to continue that love for being a part of a team at the collegiate level.
