Hello, my name is Katrin Cavanaugh and I am a track athlete and hope to continue it in college as well. Participating in track, specifically pole vaulting, has been a goal of mine since middle school. My father always told me these stories about himself pole vaulting in high school, though he wished he did it earlier than his junior year. He always said he felt like he felt free, alive, strong, overall amazing. I wanted to feel this was as well, I wanted to do what everyone was afraid of doing, I wanted to push myself to the limits i knew i could achieve. The full body engagement drew me in, having to use every muscle to get over that bar, but the height and technique solidified it.
I started track in seventh grade, though you could not pole vault until you were in high school. During this time, I made sure to focus on the events that could help me in the future, such as sprinting and long jump. It wasn't easy watching the high schoolers practice, and many times I would stay after to watch, but I learned a lot just by watching. I had patience, I watched diligently, I viewed film online. I have the skills and ability to continue pole vaulting as well as the drive to improve, which I know makes me a great addition to any team that is willing to look into me.
