My goal is to go to college and study to become a therapist in the mental health field, and if I can continue to run track in college it would make the experience even better. Sports have always been a huge part of my life and helped shape who I am as a person. Growing up, I tried a little bit of everything - running, softball, volleyball, basketball, to name a few. I’ve always had some speed, been strong, and liked to jump, which translated well into sports. Once I started high school, I had to do a lot of soul searching to figure out what I truly wanted to focus on. For years I played club softball and had a lot of success, but also loved track & field so much, too. I made the decision to focus on track & field and I’m so excited to see what I can do. My primary focus is jumping and sprints, and last year got into the 100m and 300m hurdles. Long jump has become one of my favorite things, but also improving in triple jump and the short sprints. I like the challenge of new things. Olympic coach Sue Humphrey and Olympian Rachel McCoy work with me and are such positive role models. It’s all about setting small goals that lay the groundwork for the big goals ahead. I love track for many reasons: it makes me stronger physically and mentally, I get to be around my friends, I love the feeling of getting a new PR, and so much more. Everyday I strive to make myself a little bit better and never stop learning and improving. Last year I decided to take a break from volleyball in the fall and try cross country. I've enjoyed the new challenge and feel I have a lot of potential in multiple events, so much so that I've started training for some of the heptathlon events. I hope to give that a try later this year! https://tx.milesplit.com/athletes/10380539-reese-vernieuw
