Hello, I am Jillian Reck, a senior at Wakefield High School and a track athlete.
I never expected to fall in love with track so much that I’d give up almost anything just to get back into the starting blocks. I’ve always loved team sports, especially soccer, but no matter how hard I tried or how much effort I put into it winning could still elude me. With sprinting, everything comes down to you. If you win, it’s all you; if you fail, that’s on you too. The moment I get into the blocks, hold my breath as they say “set,” and feel every muscle in my body tensing in anticipation, there’s nothing like it. The adrenaline, the mentality, everything about it depends on you. Yet, track is also a team sport in a way that I have never experienced before. In an individual race, the team is cheering for me, urging me to run faster, and pushing me to my limit, because in the end, every individual’s points go toward the team, and that’s how the team wins overall. In relays, you work with three other people; you train together, push each other, cheer each other, and hope to God none of you drop the baton. It’s a perfect balance; I can win on my own, but those points also contribute to the team. I want to continue competing in track in college. I started track last spring, which means I can only improve and get better with experience. I hope you will consider me for your track team.
