Josephine Nackman '27 Recruiting Profile

Two weeks after I threw the discus and shot put for the first time ever, I competed in my first track meet on 5 April 24. I quickly realized that I really enjoy throwing and have some natural aptitude. In only 4 meets last year, I ended up setting my schools' all-time Freshman record for discus (10th for all grades), and am third on the school’s all-time Freshman record board for shot put (16th for all grades). My Freshman season SR of 72' 3.25” for discus made me the 7th ranked Freshman in The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA, my state competition league), and 51st overall for 2024. Similarly, my Freshman season SR of 25' 6.5" for shot put made me the 10th ranked Freshman in VISSA, and 57th overall for 2024. 

In 2025, I set my school's all-time Sophomore record for discus, which is also 2nd all-time for all grades at my school (and 12th ranked for all grades in The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association for 2025). I medaled with a 3rd place in discus at the Independent Schools League Championships (my Conference meet). I also finished 8th in discus and 14th in shot put at the 2025 VISAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (States).

My coaches (field hockey, basketball, and track & field) will all confirm that I am a very hard worker and coachable. I demand a lot of myself. I stay after practice and workout on my own in-between team practices. In addition to throwing the shot put and discus in college, I am eager to learn to throw the javelin and hammer, which are not available in my high school program. If possible, I would also like to play field hockey in college. I am a scholar/athlete and intend to major in physics in college. I plan to be an astronaut, so competitive athletics are my way of maintaining a high level of fitness while developing my teamwork and leadership skills as I work toward that goal. I am primarily interested in competing as a college athlete to continue developing these skills and not necessarily as a means to pay for school, so I am interested in both D I and D III programs.
