My name is Domfo Abekah and I am a track and field athlete at Issaquah High School in Washington. I’ve been competing in Track and Field since elementary school but it wasn’t always my main sport. Before, and while, I participated in track there was always soccer. For as long as I remember I’ve been playing soccer. First on the recreational level, and then club up until my summer before 9th grade when I decided to quit. There were various factors that went into this decision but one of the main ones was the pressure. I didn't want to play, feeling like I didn’t have enough to offer my team. With track this pressure didn’t exactly go away but it manifested itself in a different way. Rather than dread it was a discontentedness that permeated my victories as much as my defeats. The lingering sensation of not performing up to my full potential has put a damper on many competitions, but I think it’s this very fact that has kept me from despairing after disappointing performances. The knowledge that I’m capable of more. It’s this assurance that keeps me in the sport, loving it, and competing with something to prove every single time.
