My name is Melissa Spyker and I have been playing volleyball since I was 12. My current position is and an outside hitter, but because of my height, I am also working on developing my skills to be a defensive specialist, libero, or setter.
In my freshman year, I played as a starting outside hitter, but also specialized in defense when I got into the backcourt. I was honoured to receive one of the two coaches awards that was handed out to our team for high skill level, improvement, and work ethic.
During the two club season I have played, I was an outside hitter. Often I would be subbed in to help with a serve receive, or when one of the middles got into the backcourt.
Thus far, my favorite volleyball experience was having the opportunity to compete in the 2016 14u Canadian Western Nationals in Winnipeg Manitoba. At such a young age group, this was my first time that I got to travel somewhere other than Alberta and nearby BC. At this tournament our team did extremely well, and our final placing was 4th overall out of over 50 teams.
Although volleyball is my passion, I also enjoy volunteering at hospitals and shelters. I love working with children, therefore in my future I wish to become a pediatrician, but also to coach volleyball so I can share my knowledge with the next generation of volleyball players.
My main goal is to have the opportunity to play volleyball at a college level. I know that my work ethic, dedication, commitment, and determination will help be to be a great asset on any team that I play for.
