Personal Statement
Hi, my name's Grace McGillivray. I'm a 17 year-old Canadian volleyball player from BC. I play competitively as a Right Side Hitter, Outside Hitter and Middle Blocker.
I've played for the Force Volleyball Club since 2015 and been a starter since joining the team. I started as a Middle Blocker, and this year have worked very hard to build my skills as an Outside/Opposite Hitter. I like playing all front row positions, but in competitive play, I usually play Right Side/Opposite.
I've earned spots on two provincial teams (2015 BC Summer Games - Bronze, and 2017 National Team Challenge Cup - Silver), and was invited to try out for the Canada Youth National team in 2017.
I attend Langley Fundamental Secondary located in Langley, BC, Canada and will graduate in 2019. I'm a hard-working student with an 85% average last year. I aspire to a career in the medical field, and plan to become a Nurse Practitioner.
Here's why I think I'd be an asset to your team:
- I'm a skilled player. In 2016, 2017 & 2018 I was Volleyball BC Season All-Star.
- I'm coachable. I listen to my coaches and respect them, even if I don't always agree at first. I try what they suggest, and am good at adapting my play based on their feedback.
- I'm dedicated to the sport and my team. I show up ready to practice, work, and play. Like every serious athlete, I focus on good nutrition, strength & conditioning, hydration and sleep.
- I get along with others. I have a lot of friends, like having fun, and do my best to avoid drama.
- I lead by example. I try to do what's right, and treat others the way I want to be treated. I'm strong enough to stand on my own if I don't agree with what others are doing, and to stand up for others when I think they're being mistreated or misjudged.
- I'm mentally tough. I don't give up when a game is going poorly and don't let things interfere with my focus. I have an in-the-moment mindset, not thinking about the future or past rally, just the skill being executed at that time.
- I can take criticism. I can accept when I've made a mistake and adjust my play so I don't repeat it.
- I'm disciplined. I like to do well in school and work hard to keep my marks up. I also like to excel in my sport, and work hard to keep improving my strength and skills. I also work part-time.
That's about it. Hope to hear from you soon!
