I am a thinking athlete. I love the strategy of the game and making quick decisions in the moment, which is why I chose to be a setter. I am a very quick study and absorb coaching tips like a sponge. I actively seek out camps and programs in Western Canada and the U.S. in order to access experienced coaches to get coaching advice. I take their information back with me to my community in Northern BC and try to incorporate that into my game. I attend the Canadian Sport School which allows me to balance my training regimen with my academics at Duchess Park Secondary.
I am a leader on the court and thrive under pressure. I like to make my hitters look good and feel a sense of accomplishment when they bury a ball I set up for them. I am in constant communication with my hitters in an effort to customize my sets to their individual preferences to help them maximize their success. I find it exciting when the opportunity allows me to increase the complexity of the offence and practice deceptive setting. I like being one of the weaker players on a team, as the presence of more skilled players allows me to develop my skills and expand my offensive choices more quickly. I would prefer to be on the bench of an advanced team over being a starter on a less skilled team.
My ideal college team would have strong passers and bold, adventurous middles and hitters, and together we would consistently push the boundaries of our offensive capabilities. I believe I could make a strong contribution to a team that is offensively aggressive and needs a smart inventive setter with good hands to bring ideas into real execution.
That being said, I have experience playing on teams that sometimes struggle with passing, and am pretty adept at making something hittable out of poor passes. I believe I would also be a good fit for a team that has great potential to be a strong offensive team, but needs a good rescue setter to compensate for inconsistent passing while the team develops to reach its full potential.
I love STEM and am skipped a grade in school for STEM courses. I intend to study in the field of math or science a post-secondary institution. I strive for excellence and take my academics very seriously. I would like to take a broad range of courses at university before deciding precisely what program to pursue, but I plan to study to a post-graduate level in my chosen field.
