Hello Coaches! My name is Amelia Arzaga and I want to play for you. I have played volleyball for about three and a half years and let me tell you, I love It! My favorite positions are setter and opposite hitter. I didn’t always start playing these positions, I played defense specialist, but when I saw how the game worked competitively, I was amazed at being a setter. From that day on I knew that was what I wanted to learn more about.
As an incoming freshman, I made the frosh team at St.Lucy’s High School, playing as a the starting setter and would play all around too. During the second high school tournament we won the gold bracket and I received MVP. Shortly after, our school’s volleyball varsity team made it to CIF and invited me to be part of the ride. I was on cloud nine! A few other accomplishments that happened during my three years of playing volleyball are as follows: 2022 Arrows Award recipient for leadership, 2021 & 2022 Coaches Award,2023 Coaches award and co-capitan. During my 1st year in high school, I also got ranked #9 in the nation, #3 in California, and #2 in Southern California for assists. Lastly, I also got player of the match twice, as a Freshman.
During my volleyball journey, I have learned many skills. I learned to manage my time well, not to let my team down, not to give up when things get tough, to communicate by being loud on the court, not to be discouraged, and to always be a good leader and role model. Being a setter in my team has taught me to be flexible, creative, and to monitor my surroundings. I love being able to have good relationships not just with my teammates but also like to get to know my coaches. It's important to trust the process, and to see the possibilities.
Playing in college would be a blessing. It will prove that I have grown in my skill set and overcome the challenges I may have in the court. My home at the next level would be playing at a D1 - D3 school with academics as a core foundation. I would love to be close to home in California, however I am open to see other parts of the country. Currently I am leaning towards furthering my education as a teacher, but also love working with animals and learning more about interacting with humans.
