"The scariest moment is always just before you start" -Stephen King
I am scared a lot, until I am on the court. The court is the place where I feel powerful and confident and playing volleyball for me has helped me develop a new mindset. My talent and hard work combined have shown me that I am actually brave. I am learning that it is okay to be scared but I can do it anyway because I am wildly capable! Volleyball has also given me confidence in other areas of my life. It has taught me how to be vocal, how to listen, and how to work as a teammate. So although I know that fear may sneak up on me from time to time, I know it is just a moment and all I need to do is decide to start anyway.
I started playing community volleyball when I was 7 as a way of making friends. I never realized at the time that I was joining a community that would rally around me and build me up as a leader. I blossomed in my community league and later made the middle school team and a local club team, eventually being selected as captain and co-captain (respectively) of both. My mantra on the court is "I am 6 foot with a 9 foot touch" because I know that being a great player means believing I am a great player. Having that level of confidence has also helped me inspire my team and mentor younger players.
My goal on every team I play on is to have a positive attitude and to play better than the game before. I am always striving to improve my own expectations for myself and the goals my coach and I have set for me. Even with 4 more years of school to go, I am already excited to think about my college team and what an honor it will be to play with my dream school's name on my jersey. I know I will make my school, my team, and my teammates proud!
