Hi my name is Maya Sousa, I am a defensive specialist from White Plains, NY. I’ve always been an athlete - played softball since I was 8, on school teams since 7th grade and just finished my varsity season. I always thought softball was my sport, until I discovered volleyball. I started playing volleyball my freshman year and instantly fell in love - the fast pace of the game was such a rush. I remember being in the outfield for multiple innings and a play never making it near me –in comparison, the entire volleyball court was so alive. I played both JV seasons as an outside hitter and was Captain sophomore year. In my first season playing club with Alpha Gamma (based in Tarrytown, NY) I was lucky to get a lot of training and exposure. Our club team was small that first season, and the amount of court time and national tournament experience fueled my passion for the game. I’ve made friends for life on the court.
My first varsity season the team required versatility and flexibility from some of the players. I stepped into a more defensive role and discovered playing defense is my favorite part of the game. In the softball outfield I was able to successfully track fly balls and on the court I am able to anticipate where the hitter is intending their ball to go. In my last club season I made a full transition to defensive specialist/ libero. I feel a rush when I receive a hit from the opposing team that allows a play to be made on my side of the net.
I spent the summer in Florida attending camps at different colleges and even got to play (for fun) some beach volleyball. As Captain, both in club and in this past varsity season, I’ve proven myself to be a leader on the court and a team player – wanting the team to be successful because of my efforts. I am confident in my passing and my transitions during plays. I have been really excited to work on my defensive skills throughout my last club season; making my way to the next level of play after high school. I know my college experience includes volleyball and look forward to finding the right team that I can contribute towards many winning seasons.
Best, Maya
