My name is Tyra Stevens. I am currently attending Mountain View High school in Bend, Oregon, I will be graduating in 2020. I started playing volleyball in fourth grade, and at first I didn’t think it was my sport, so I skipped a year and didn’t play in fifth grade, but continued to play softball, soccer, flag football and about 5 or 6 dance classes that year.
I started playing again at Sky View middle school in sixth grade and also played for Oregon Volleyball Academy (OVA), I played on a 12s youth local team. After that year I began to understand that this is what I want to do. I continude to play all three years in middle school and another year of OVA in eighth grade, I was on 14s youth travel team.
Once high school started I played as a starter on the freshman team, I was an all around outside hitter. At first I believed that I was always going to be an outside because I love to hit and also love the feeling you get in games. So I then was a starter for OVA on 16s youth travel team also as an all around outside. As sophomore year came, my varsity and jv coach help me realize I needed to play libero/ds because I will benefit more due to my height. I was the libero for jv and then switched to right back also as a starter.
After my jv season I played for a club called North Pacific Juniors (NPJ) I was on 16s youth travel team, I was a starter from left back. Near the end of season we had a tournament in Reno, Nevada we placed first in the championship game.
This season I fell even more in love with the game. As my mom always says “Volleyball is her life line, it is what keeps her going each and every day”. Because I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t ever play again. I always keep a positive attitude on and off the court, plus I am very dedicated to the sport.
So far I have played a total of 10 seasons and I am hoping to finish high school with a total of 14 seasons and then to play in college. I am 5ft 2in, my standing reach is about 6ft 4in, my block jump is 7ft 10in and my vertical approach is 8ft 3in.
I am very confident in all my skills and feel I can impact your program immediately. I enjoy competition and want to be challenged at the highest level so I can gain experience for future matches and strategies that will not only benefit my performance but the team. I can see my college years being a personal growth period for me.Thanks for giving me this opportunity to share my personal statement. Hopefully you have me on your radar so someday my dream comes true.
