Hi my name is Nyalok Akec {Nya-luke} (or Nya). Growing up playing volleyball, I have always dreamed of playing in college. I started playing volleyball in the 8th grade where I knew nothing about volleyball because I grew up around basketball. I continued to play volleyball in high school and began playing club my junior year which I am continuing to pursue in bettering my skills as an athlete. Freshman year I played as a middle which I learned to play for the first time. My sophomore year I played as a right side which was different for me from being a middle to being a right side, but I then started to love it more because it fit how I wanted to play. My junior year I moved back to middle where I got the chance to better myself as a middle hitter and blocker. For my junior year club season I played all around except as setter. We played a 6/3 rotation which allowed me the chance to play in different positions and see what I can play my best in as an athlete. For my senior year I’m not playing on my high school team, but I am playing on a club team for fall season and I am an outside hitter for my club. I see outside as my permanent position because that is where I play my best and where I work the best, but if needed I can play any other positions because I know how to adjust to those other positions!
Being a student athlete is to be surrounded by a family and around the sport I have grown to love. I keep the same motivation on and off the court to strive to become a college student athlete. What I can bring to the team is moments that make us happy and being able to keep positive energy for the team throughout our season. I also have the ability to keep working and keep others around me working towards our goals as a team as well as our own personal goals. I am different because I push and continue pushing towards my goals whenever there's no visual chance until I pull that to be visible, for example being a student athlete. A no visual chance for me is becoming a college student athlete. It being my senior year it seems impossible to get recruited, but I want to keep pushing myself until I know for sure that I worked as hard as I can to get to where I get. I want to make my parents proud for bringing me here. I want to get the chance to continue my education majoring in a career I strive for while being around the sport I love and the people around me that I will grow to love as well.
