Personal Statement

I have completed many of my short-term goals and continue to progress and make new goals for myself.  Some of my current high school goals are to serve 95% for the season, serve 45 mph (currently able to serve 42), for our team to be League and District Champions, make First Team All-League, place at State and earn a Sportsmanship medal there, and to receive our team's Most Inspirational award.  Any of these goals which I don't accomplish this year will carry over to my senior year.  As a senior next year, I want to accomplish, and improve, these goals again and will add others, including being voted our school's Miss Volleyball.

I also play USAV club volleyball and every year our goal is to go to Girls Nationals and place higher than we have before.  I was on teams that participated in the 2008 and 2009 USAV Junior Olympics and the 2012 AAU Girls National Championships.  I have also participated in the USAV High Performance program.  I have been to Select Training Camp, Select A3 Camp, and was invited to Youth A3 Camp in 2012, but could not attend because of a prior competitive commitment.  I will try out again this spring and want to qualify for the A3 Camp or a team through this program.

One of my long-term goals and dreams is to play volleyball in college as a setter.  Right now I am excited about the thought of playing in college and am building specific goals for when I make a college team.  I will major in architecture and that is just as important to me as volleyball, so I am looking for both of these things in a college.

My highest aspiration is to play volleyball in the Olympics.  I have more experience playing indoors than I do playing beach volleyball, but I love playing doubles. It is great to strategize and try to anticipate what your opponent will try to do.  It is fun finding the weak spots in the other team and getting a kill.  It is easier to do this when there are only two people on the other side of the court.  Misty May-Teanor, Kerri Walsh-Jennings, and other Olympians have been some of my biggest inspirations, along with my Dad, who is my high school and club volleyball coach.

  • Newspaper article written by John F. Cleveland II Sportswriter Confluence 17, the 17-and-under girls volleyball team with girls from Brewster, Pateros and Chelan, competed in the AAU National Girls Volleyball Championships June 24-27 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. Andie Gebbers, Margie Brammer, Brette Boesel and Markie Miller, all from Brewster, Kim Vazquez, Chloe Gill and Jessi Dowers, all from Pateros, and Jenny Sundberg of Chelan made up the Confluence 17 team, which was coached by Gene Dowers, Pateros, and Marcy Boesel, Brewster. All the players are members of the Confluence Volleyball Club headquartered in Pateros with players from North Central Washington. Greg Knott, Melanie Chamberlain, Carlene Anders and Ana Vazquez, Confluence coaches, also assisted in practice and preliminary tournaments. Confluence 17 competed in the 177-team U17 Club Division and went 5-5 overall in three days of pool play and a final day of championship brackets. On the first day of pool play, Confluence defeated Asics Willowbrook White from Willowbrook, Texas, 25-14, 28-25, 15-10; lost to Memphis Metro Attack from Memphis, Tenn., 25-14, 25-12; lost to Asic Munciana Stingrays from Muncy, Ind., 25-21, 25-13. "We didn't draw an easy pool, but didn't play our best ball either," said Dowers. "We weren't doing a couple of the things that we'd put together in our last practices and it kept us from playing as well as we might have. Even then, we finished in a three-way tie for second in our pool. Through some pretty complicated tie-breaking formulas we ended up getting fourth in the pool and learned the hard truth that fourth place gets locked into the bottom 25 percnet of the results with no way to work up. Disappointing as that was the girls got back to business to finish as high as possible." In the second day of pool play, Confluence lost to Tampa Elite from Tampa, Fla., 25-23, 26-24; beat Apex Alpha from Spokane, Wash., 28-26, 25-21; beat Attack Blue from Chicago, Ill., 25-22, 25-16. "We got back to doing the things that had brought us together so well and our level of play started increasing every match," said Dowers. "Every opponent gave us a tough fight and it took all of our tricks and every bit of Coach Boesel's motivation to keep us in those matches." On the third day, Confluence beat HVVC Blue from Huron Valley, Mich., 26-24, 25-20; lost to MDJRS Elite from Baltimore, Md., 25-23, 21-25, 15-13; and beat LAVA Monster from Lafayette, Ind., 25-21, 20-25, 15-10 in a crossover match. "The girls stepped up again to have an even better day," said Dowers. "We were locked in with a bunch of teams who had also had a rough first day, and were still ticked off about it and every match was getting decided by a couple of points. The team really pulled together to gang up on our opponents both strategically and mentally. And lots of folks commented on how much fun we were having doing it." In the first match of the Purple Bracket on the fourth day, Confluence lost to A2 Blue from Ann Arbor, Mich., 25-15, 25-23. "The weight of the moment got to a couple of us in the first set and we never got back to playing like we were the day before," said Dowers. "I believe that if we'd have pulled out that second set we would have taken the third to continue in the tournament, but it didn't quite swing our way. Even though we had hoped to finish much higher I think the set of circumstances we faced was just about ideal to bring these girls to the next level in their volleyball. We were so pleased to be able to put this team together and they did not disappoint in any way. They grew and grew as players and young women and I believe the experience will be very powerful for them in their high school volleyball and their lives."
