Personal Statement
My name is Mya Martenson. I am going to be a junior at Altoona High School (WI). I have played volleyball since 4th grade. I am competitive and passionate about not only volleyball but basketball as well. Once volleyball got more competitive, I began to like it even more. In my free time I enjoy playing volleyball with friends and family. In 7th grade, my goal was to make varsity volleyball and varsity basketball as a freshman. With that goal in mind, I worked hard to push myself to be my best. In 8th grade, I began to play travel volleyball which connected me with people that were also passionate about the sport. As freshman, I did make varsity in both volleyball and basketball which I am very proud of.
As a student-athlete you are held to a higher standard, which I completely agree with that. I study hard and make it a priority to keep my grades up. I joined the Interact club, which is an opportunity to volunteer club around the community. I also volunteer through at church in various activities. When our sport programs run youth camps I make them a priority to be available to help in whatever way my coach wants me to. I remember being that age and looking up to the high school athletes that were helping, and being impressed by them. I hope to be a role model to the youth in our sports programs, not only as an athlete but as an individual as well.
In college I want to be pushed as a student and athlete. I would like to go to a college that offers me the highest competition to better myself. I have wanted to be a college athlete for as long as I can remember and I will do whatever it takes to make that possible.
On the court, I hold myself to high standards and strive to be an excellent teammate. As the youngest player on varsity, I had to step out of my comfort zone and learned leadership skills from my older teammates. I enjoy being coached to better my skills and help my team succeed.
