Personal Statement
I am 5’7 and weigh approximately 180 lbs. I began wrestling on the boys’ varsity team at my high school at the start of my sophomore year, where I was one of 4 girls. I qualified for the State competition in the 225 lb weight class, only being 168 lb. I was the smallest competitor in the division. My junior year, I competed in the State competition in the 185 lb. My two best matches were in my junior year when I defeated a 220 lb boy and a 280 lb girl, 50 lbs and 100 lbs heavier than me, respectively. At the end of my second season I decided I did not want to stop wrestling because the season was over so I joined club wrestling, being one of 2 girls. Before discovering my love for wrestling, I was involved in several types of martial arts, swimming, and dancing. My ideal college is one that not only has a female wrestling team that I can help build and shape in this time of increasing interest by female wrestlers, but one with coaches that put as much time and effort into training their female wrestlers as they do training their male wrestlers. I want to contribute to and be involved with a team that has great sportsmanship, good team relations, and a positive environment, with girls who possess strong mentalities, who support each other, and who demonstrate impressive wrestling skills that will challenge me. My ultimate goal is to become skilled enough to coach youth as a way not only to continue wrestling as an adult, but also to encourage a love for wrestling in others, particularly young girls.
