From the minute I stepped on a wrestling mat almost 10 years ago, I knew that was where I belonged. Since then, I have strived to challenge myself and compete at the highest levels. The passion I have for the sport of wrestling has helped me learn many important lessons that I will use throughout my whole life. First, I discovered the importance of hard work and dedication. There was a point in my wrestling career where I was the top in the nation. I won numerous state and national titles, including a Tulsa Championship and the coveted U.S.A. Wrestling Triple Crown. I went years without a loss, and I felt untouchable. Inevitably though, I faced an opponent that had trained to beat me, and they did. This was a humbling moment and one that was hard to take. Support from coaches and adults in my life helped me realize that if I wanted to progress and continue to succeed, I need to keep my head down, and never stop working. Feeling comfortable is not an option. Losses will happen, but I have learned to use them as a tool. Whether it is in school, wrestling, or life, I have found that things don't just get handed to you, so if you want to get something done, you need to be willing to put in the effort and not get discouraged. This is a message I remind myself of daily.
Wrestling has also taught me the importance of pushing myself beyond what I think my limits are. Having great coaches and practice partners is so important, but holding myself accountable, setting goals and accomplishing them has pushed me even farther. In school, I challenge myself to maintain a high GPA while taking honors level classes and balancing academics and sports. Even though I am just starting my high school wrestling career, I hope to continue to grow, earn success, and one day, wrestle at the college level. I am proud of how far I have come both as a wrestler and as a person. I look forward to seeing where the lessons I have learned from the sport I love will take me in my future.
