2017 Highlights #2
2017 Highlights Let me introduce myself, I am John J. Carroll III, but everyone calls me "Trip". My parents came up with this nickname long before I was born, because I am the third, so I am Triple....Trip. I am a Marine BRAT (which is an acronym for Boldness, Responsibility, Adaptability and Tolerance), and I am proud to wear that title. I come from 2 families with long ties to the Marine Corps....Great Grandfathers, Grandfathers, Great Uncles and Uncles all having served in the Marine Corps. I love the life I lead, it has taken me to Okinawa, Japan.....Seoul, South Korea.....Stuttgart, Germany and many U.S. States. Why do I mention this? I mention this because through these travels, I have learned who I am and what I want in life, which is a good education and a career in the Marine Corps. I believe that being a Marine BRAT has shown me how to be a disciplined athlete and a disciplined student. This is what I would bring to any Collegiate Sports Team.
When I get to college, I would really like to pursue a degree in European History with a specialization in WWII history and a minor in Political Science. I have always found WWII history fascinating even from a young age. My mother and father tell me that as a young kid I would rather watch the history channel than Cartoons, well except Scooby Doo (I still really like the old Scooby cartoons). I enjoy learning about "Our Greatest Generation" and visiting the memorials and battlefields here in Europe. I truly think that the quote from George Santayana "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", is very accurate and very timely in this day and age. I would choose a Political Science Minor because the Government is another fascinating subject to me due to its association with History. Our Government is very interesting and the men and women who have lead our country through its most trying times are some of the strongest and wisest people I can think of, I would like to count myself in amongst their ranks after a good military career.
"And where do sports come into this", you ask, well to me sports are not only fun, but they are a way to push yourself to be your best and a way to see how strong of a leader you are. I have wrestled, played football and done shot put throughout my High School career and all of these sports have taught me many different things. Wrestling has taught me the most about myself and challenged me the most. It has shown me that through hard work, dedication, discipline and overall effort one can be successful and be good at something. When on the mat, it is you against the other wrestler and when you win there is no better sense of accomplishment. This is why I would like to continue wrestling while attending college. I don't want to lose what I have learned, and I believe that wrestling (all the sports) has made me a better and stronger person and set me up to be a successful adult.
So to conclude, I believe that if you were to look at me for your program, you will see not only a strong athlete and leader but a good person who cares about his academics and the world around him.
