Personal Statement

I have worked hard throughout high school, both academically and athletically.  I enjoy physics, astronomy, and computer science. I have a real passion for wrestling, a sport I respect because it requires humility, courage, and the ability to give everything you've got each time you compete.  I believe that the qualities that are required to excel in wrestling are the same that make one successful in any area of life.

Wrestling has really honed my ability to set personal goals and achieve them.  When I first started wrestling in elementary school I hated it because I kept losing. My parents refused to let me give up despite my protests. Again and again I was forced onto my back by my opponents. My parents were insistent on me continuing because I had a lot of energy at home and they wanted to put it to good use.  I started participating in wrestling tournaments in the fifth grade when I moved to Massachusetts. While I still lost a lot of my matches, I also did begin to win more and more. Week after week I persisted.  By sixth grade I began to get some traction.   I ended the season by competing in youth sectionals and placed second.  This opened up an opportunity for me to wrestle in the state competition where I placed fourth in the state at my weight for fifth and sixth graders. Despite that success, I wanted to be done with wrestling because it was extremely stressful for me to wrestle at such competitive tournaments.  The anxiety I experienced before each match was intense.  In spite of this, after thinking a long time about it, I decided I might have the ability to win the state championship next year if I really trained hard for it.

The following year when sectionals came I lost completely.  I didn't even come close to qualifying for states. I was devastated, but for some reason a desire was ignited within me to do whatever I could to be the best. I began to wrestle year round,  both in season with my school and off season with regional clubs.  In fact, I sought out the toughest clubs to join. I began weight training and cardiovascular workouts on my own.  I started focusing on nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.  No one had to nag me or make me do anything in wrestling because I had already made the decision to push myself harder than they would push me. Then Covid hit, so I could not compete during eighth grade. Instead, I decided to set my aspirations on training for high school. I was a late bloomer physically and I often wrestled guys who happened to be much stronger than me physically even thought they were my same weight. This forced me to learn a lot of good moves and hone my technical skills.  However, good moves did not always override the shear strength of some of my opponents. I just worked past that, did what I could do, the best that I could do, with the strength and intelligence in the sport that I was developing.

This determination has brought me a lot of success throughout my wrestling career in high school.  I wrestled varsity every year in high school and placed in almost all of my tournaments. I qualified for states my Sophomore and Junior year of high school in two different weight brackets, and this year looks like it will be my best by far.  My coaches have said that wrestlers can accomplish anything they choose to pursue in life.  I have come to believe that to be true. I have taken the strategies that I developed to be successful in this sport and applied them to other challenges in my life and have overcome them as well.  I know these skills will serve me well in college and in my future career.
