Personal Statement
When I arrived at George School as a freshman, several upperclassmen approached me about trying out for the wrestling team. I decided to try out because I felt ready to make a change from competitive swimming, which I assumed I was going to do in high school because much of who I thought I was at the time was a "swimmer." After many hours of informal practices run by upperclassman (all the while participating in another sport new to me - cross country), I went to wrestling tryouts and made the team. One year later, as a Sophomore, I became co-captain of Varsity Wrestling. I this short period of time, I discovered a genuine passion for the sport. Like swimming, wrestling provides me with a combination of individual competition, while continuously pushing me harder to win for my team.
I began competitive swimming at five years old and continued until I was about to enter high school. I would practice four nights a week and spent most weekends either at meets or practice. I am sure that competitive swimming instilled in me a drive, dedication, and work ethic that has carried over to wrestling. The mental and physical demands of wrestling have helped me transition into the academic challenges of George School. This was not an easy transition but I am forming sound study habits to help me tackle tough courses. I have enough confidence in my development that I enrolled in IB HL World History and IB HL World Literature 2 for my senior year. I have had a passion for history, especially military history, since grade school.
As a team captain, and despite being younger than a number of my teammates, I am compelled to lead by example by always striving to improve technique, workout hard and often, maintain a healthy diet, and to demonstrate sportsmanship and comradery. My goal is to continuously improve and to learn from as many different coaches as possible. I am wrestling year-round through club wrestling and have attended college techniques camps at local clubs and Rutgers and Princeton Universities. I also enjoy participating in off-season opens and round-robin tournaments and am lucky to have great options near my home.
I understand that college wrestling is a huge leap from high school wrestling. However, I have the work ethic and the coachable spirit that would make me an asset to your team. I value the experience of older wrestlers and the knowledge and dedication of coaches at all levels. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you about my academic and athletic goals and to learn more about college opportunities and offerings.
