My name is Joey Showalter, and I am an AP student at Elkhorn Area High School in Elkhorn, Wisconsin (class of 2022). After high school, I would like to pursue wrestling at the collegiate level and continue my education at a high-level university.
It has been a goal of mine since I was a youth wrestler to compete at the college level. My strong work ethic and never-quit attitude have helped me to excel on the mat and in the classroom. I am looking for a collegiate wrestling program that can push and shape my athletic abilities to be the best wrestler I can be. I am also looking for the same challenges in the university’s academic curriculum. I learned a long time ago that through hard work and dedication, that I can achieve any goal I set. I am extremely coachable and willing to put in what it takes to succeed. I understand that preparing for success is a process, and I am willing to do whatever is necessary to attain it.
I began my freshman year of high school undersized at 90 pounds. I achieved a winning record and came just short of qualifying for state that year. Being undersized and losing to kids I knew I could beat really propelled me to work in the offseason. My sophomore year, I came to the state tournament ranked 10th. I beat many kids ranked higher than me and ended up placing 5th at 106 pounds. Junior year, I was ranked number one in my weight class at 113 pounds all season. I went 15-1 in that limited season and finished as a state runner-up. That loss has driven me to put in even more work and focus on getting stronger. I have been training continuously since then and competed in many national tournaments in all styles while moving up in weight classes. I currently weigh 135 lbs and have been working with a personal trainer to put on as much muscle as I can before the start of my senior year. I lift weights 5 days a week and attend four wrestling practices each week.
My academic interest is to pursue a business degree in Finance.
