It is my pleasure to introduce myself “Derek Ronaldo Riddick Jr.” to you as a rising, Junior at Jackson Reed High School. As a student athlete, I have gained a great deal of insight into what it means to show up, be responsible, and maintain discipline in many aspects of my life. I have learned many lessons from the game of baseball that have been useful to me both on and off the field.
In baseball, I have become part of a brotherhood and have learned that every player on the field must work together towards a common goal. For me, it is imperative to depend on them, and for them, it is imperative to depend on me. It is essential for each player of the team to put their best foot forward. The team is responsible to encourage each player to put forth their best performance. The participation in this sport has taught me to work hard and respect what every player brings to the game.
Since I am a rising Junior, my grades have become very important to me. In order to achieve success in both areas, I am striving to achieve a balance between academics and extracurricular activities. The rigorous course load I am taking in high school is preparing me to balance college academics and athletics. I am confident that I will be able to balance both in college.
