Personal Statement
I've loved baseball since I was old enough to throw a ball. I've always had a natural talent for it. I started for my varsity baseball team when I was an 8th grader. I was a good player, but until the end of my sophomore year in high school I simply relied on my natural abilities. Since then, my raw abilities and baseball skills have improved dramatically due to two things. It was at that point that I committed to a regular strength & conditioning program. I also sought out and found ways to challenge myself by playing in leagues and attending events where I could compete with and against the best players my age.
In the spring of 2017, I was clocked at 89 mph on the mound and 90 mph across the infield. I led or was at the top of the leader boards in most offensive categories in the Perfect Game Spring Wood Bat Scout League. I had never been stronger or faster, and I was ready to dominate the summer high school baseball season.
Unfortunately, in May of my junior year I got sick. I tried to play early in the summer season, but I didn't have the strength and stamina I was used to. I was sleeping 12 hours a night. I was eventually diagnosed with mono and lost four weeks of my summer season as I rested and recovered. I gradually got stronger, but it took much longer than I expected. I went from 185 to 169 pounds when I was sick. I'm now up to 190 pounds and feeling great.
This situation taught me a lot: patience, faith, and appreciation all surrounded by frustration. I have learned the frustration that comes from having no control over the healing process. I wanted to show people what I am capable of, but this illness prevented me from doing that during the most critical phase of the recruiting calendar.
I've always loved baseball, but this situation also gave me an even greater appreciation for the game. I no longer take it for granted. Now, I am even more committed to being the best player and teammate I can be. If you decide to offer me a scholarship, I will model a work ethic and attitude that is infectious and helps make your entire team better.
