My name is Steven Mills, I am 6'03'' and weigh 185 pounds. I have been playing baseball since I was four years old. I genuinely love nothing more than playing the game and being on the field with my team. My high school, club team coaches and private coaches have all been telling me that I have a future in college baseball, and I would really like to see that come to fruition. My primary position has always been catcher; however, I am also a pitcher and play left field. In the ninth grade, at over 6ft., my coach asked me to play left field. Despite little history in the outfield, I embraced the opportunity and now count left as one of my most effective positions besides catching and pitching. I have always performed well on the mound with a variety of pitches and a consistent fastball speed of 85mph at sixteen years old. However, catching is still my thing and favorite position. I really started to come into my own at the start of my sophomore year of high school making the varsity team as the starting catcher for our 6A high school and getting second team all-district. I believe that after playing several different positions, I have become a much more aware player as well. For instance, my experience as a catcher has made me a significantly better base runner. My reads are better, and my jumps are quicker. I have always been a strong bat in the lineup as well, right side dominant, and I am regularly our four-hole hitter on both my high school and club teams.
Academically I have taken a heavy AP course load in high school as well as numerous dual credit college courses (mostly what I will be taking my senior year). I do not want any College or University to think that I did not completely challenge myself in the classroom. As far as school size go’s I am leaning towards a mid-sized school as I am the type of student that is in constant communication with my peers and my teachers. I do not want to go to a school where you can only have contact with teacher’s aides or tutors. However, I do look forward to going on many college visits, so this preference may change. I would like to stay in Texas or the central U.S. because I am from Texas, and I know how important it is to be within a car ride from home. But if the right opportunity presented itself, I would choose the path that sported the best coaches and most competitive baseball, regardless of the location. I am also well aware that there are a lot of good baseball programs out there in all divisions of the NCAA and I am really looking forward to playing at a school where I can continue to grow under experienced coaches while playing at a higher level. I envision my college years to be a true growth period. My goal is to explore a business major that will position me for either graduate school or a career in the financial markets. On the field I plan to be a hardworking and dedicated player and a positive influence on the team. As I improve both physically and mentally throughout my college baseball career, I will strive to be an asset to the team behind the plate and in the batting lineup. Most importantly, I will conduct myself in such a manner, on and off the field, which will bring respect to my team, my coaches, and the school I attend.
I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read my personal statement, and good luck in the upcoming baseball season.
