My father was my youth coach in baseball and football. He had the same first speech on the first day of practice every season. I heard it so many times that I have it memorized. He would bark with intensity: “Boys, as of this minute we are all brothers. We live together, and we die together. I expect you will have your brother’s back on the field, in school, in the grocery store, or where ever you are. You are to take outstanding care of each other at all times. Violate this, and you will not play for me.”
Baseball is a team sport. We win together or lose together. From this example I learned to leave everything on the field for my teammates. People can question my ability, but no one will ever question my heart to do my job for my brothers. You can see this in how I play baseball. My approach to hitting is to get on base however I can. That means I often cut down my swing and hit low line drives for percentage. On defense, I know my pitcher is working his tail off on the mound. He deserves every routine play to be made for him consistently. More than that, we have to sell out and steal hits from the opposition if we are to defeat a worthy opponent.
Coach, these are the things I promise you. I will never be a headache to you. I am not a prima donna and I will lead by example. I do not believe that I’m worth more than another player. I want to be a cog in a machine that wins a championship and I will give everything I have to make that happen.
