What I feel sets me apart from other players with similar measurables is my baseball IQ, what Baseball Factory player development coordinator Josh Eldridge calls my “6th tool.” I have always loved baseball, and starting at a young age I loved to watch baseball highlight films, including all of the old World Series. Instead of cartoons on Saturday mornings, I grew up watching the Big Red Machine and Casey Stengel's Yankees. This improved my situational knowledge at a young age. Over the years, I have also been coached by many different people who have helped me with my understanding of the game. From 12U through middle school, my travel coach was John Cole, a former NCAA coach at many universities, including William & Mary, UPenn, and Dartmouth. He coached us all the way to the 2014 Cal Ripken 10U World Series, and he helped me have the tools and mentality to become an immediate varsity starter as a high school freshman. My head coach at Jamestown High School is Barry Miller, who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and reached AAA with the Phoenix Firebirds. I am learning from his years of experience as a pro. My travel coach was Charlie Dragum, who coached Hanover High School to 3 VHSL State Championships, and I also trained with Rob Grimes, a VCU Hall of Famer and another coach with MPH101, my travel squad. Under their coaching, I believe that I have become not only a more mindful student of the game, but also a better human being. You cannot see any of this in my dash times and exit velo, but this 6th tool has and will result in wins on the ballfield.
