Hello, my name is Kristen Mihalcik, and I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I love to volunteer for the Special Olympics, and I am elated to tell you that as a coach/mentor for the Special Olympics Cross Country Ski Team and Snowshoeing team, I had one athlete win a gold medal, one won a silver medal and two won bronze medals. I work side by side with these athletes and they in turn give me the strength, the power and the mind set to never quit!
I’m sure one of the next questions that comes to mind, is why I chose field hockey. Well, between the ages of 4 and 9, I played for a travel ice hockey team. When I found out that our school district didn’t have a woman’s ice hockey team, I decided to try field hockey – especially since the basic objective in both games is to shoot an object into your opponent’s goal.
Another thing, the high school I attend, always competed at the lowest division level in Connecticut. This past year (2019), the school decided to start competing at the highest division level in Connecticut. In our first year, we were one point away from qualifying for the state championships in field hockey. As a sophomore in 2019 and during this transition, I started for the varsity team as a midfielder and I truly believe that I did have an impact on our success. 2020 is an exciting year and I can't wait to help my team make that championship a reality.
One of the biggest lessons I earned from playing field hockey, is that I needed to find my strengths and then capitalize on them and continue to improve on them. I am the first one to admit that I’m not the fastest player on the field. However, I am a smart player. I have great stick handling abilities, I’m able to move the ball down the field or sidelines – all the while, looking for one of my teammates to “get open” so that I can pass it to them for a score or so that we can continue moving the ball down the field towards our opponent’s goal.
Lastly, as I enter my Junior year in high school and during my college years, one goal that I plan on conquering is “time-management”. This will allow me to help structure my daily activities, which will allow me to accomplish my academic goals, and still have the time and energy to participate in sports and maintain a social life as well.
